Scriptural Text: ;

As Christians, we should understand both the promise that trouble will occur and the plan Scripture lays out to deal with it:

The Promise of Trouble (). A. We Are Born into a Sinful World (). B. We Are Born into a Sinful Body (). C. We Are Born into a Spiritual Warfare ().

A. We Are Born into a Sinful World ().
B. We Are Born into a Sinful Body ().
gives an understanding that the Christian life and ministry is lived out in the midst of trouble, and that it often brings trouble. So how do we cope with trouble in these times?
C. We Are Born into a Spiritual Warfare ().

The Roots of Trouble (3:1-5) a. In the last days perilous times shall come (v.1) b. a godless world (v.2-4) c. a powerless religion (v.5) [; ; ; ; ; ]

(NKJV) 17But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
17But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
(NKJV) 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

(NKJV) 18For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.

(NKJV) 12And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

(NKJV) 4For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

(NKJV) 21because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

The Spread of Trouble (3:6-9) a. Corrupt ministers lead gullible followers astray b. Corrupt ministers resist the truth c. Corrupt ministers and their corrupt religion will be exposed []

In the last days perilous times shall come
a godless world (v.2-4)
a powerless religion (v.5)
(NKJV) 7and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
7and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,
8in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
10when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
As Christians, we should understand both the promise that trouble will occur and the plan Scripture lays out to deal with it:

The Plan for Trouble. A. Trouble Refines and Purifies Us (). B. Trouble Drives Men to God in Prayer (). C. Trouble Can Produce Spiritual Maturity (). D. Trouble Can Glorify God and Spread the Gospel ().

A. Trouble Refines and Purifies Us ().
B. Trouble Drives Men to God in Prayer ().
C. Trouble Can Produce Spiritual Maturity (). D. Trouble Can Glorify God and Spread the Gospel ().
D. Trouble Can Glorify God and Spread the Gospel ().
So here is the plan prescription to overcome trouble:

Overcoming Trouble (3:10-13) a. following a godly example (v.10) b. endure persecution (v.11-12) c. guarding against evil men (v.13) [; ; ; Ph 1:29; ; ; ]

(NKJV) 13For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
13For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
(NKJV) 1Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
7and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,

8in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
(NKJV) 20Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
10when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
(NKJV) 29For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
(NKJV)
20Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

(NKJV) 30Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
30Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
(NKJV) 17Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.

(NKJV) 1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,

The Firm Foundation for Living in Troubled Times (3:14-17) a. The believer must live in the Scripture (v.14) b. Scripture makes a person wise unto salvation (v.15) c. Scripture is inspired by God (v.16) d. Scripture perfects a man and equips him for every good work (v.17) [; ; ; ,; ]

(NKJV) 17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
(NKJV) 4For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

(NKJV) 11Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

(NKJV) 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

(NKJV) 13However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

(NKJV) 12For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

(NKJV) 1“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

(NKJV) 28Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
